The union representing 45,000 U.S. dockworkers at East and Gulf Coast ports has temporarily suspended its strike until 15 January, following a tentative agreement on wage increases. This deal, encouraged by the Biden administration to prevent further supply chain disruption and support Hurricane Helene recovery efforts, allows dockworkers to continue under their previous contract as negotiations proceed. — The Associated Press
Spain’s hospitality industry has sharply criticized new government regulations requiring tourist accommodations to provide more detailed guest information to authorities, despite a two-month delay in implementation until December. French Prime Minister Michel Barnier has opened the door to reversing some of President Emmanuel Macron’s tax cuts on businesses and the wealthy in an effort to fix the country’s widening budget deficit. There were 646,800 vacant homes across the 23 wards of central Tokyo last year, the highest number ever recorded in data going back to 1958, according to a survey from the Interior Ministry. The survey, taken every five years, put the percentage of vacancies in central Tokyo at 10.9%, up from 10.4% in 2018. — Nikkei Asia
Applications to refinance mortgages in the United States jumped for a second week as more homeowners capitalized on the cheapest borrowing costs in two years. The Mortgage Bankers Association’s refinancing index increased 20.3% in the week ended 20 September to the highest level since April 2022, as the contract rate on a 30-year fixed mortgage eased two basis points to 6.13%, the eighth straight weekly drop and the longest stretch of declines since 2018-2019. — Bloomberg
A survey of 2,585 Amazon employees on anonymous job review site Blind found that 73% of respondents said they are considering looking for a new job following CEO Andy Jassy’s recent memo announcing a full-time return-to-office. A separate survey from Glassdoor found that 74% of Amazon workers are “rethinking” the future of their careers. — CNBC
